Mount Nebo the final chapter of Deuteronomy. Mount Nebo is where the Hebrew prophet Moses was given a view of the Promised Land that God was giving to the Hebrews. "And Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho" (Deuteronomy 34:1).
Mukawir - on top of a 700-meter high hill 38 miles (61km) from Amman, can be found the ruins of the Machaerus fortress, which belonged to Herod the Great. It is said that here Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, presented Salome with the head of John the Baptist. (B/D)
DAY 3 - FEBRUARY 3, 2014 PETRA
After breakfast, proceed to Petra. “Petra is prepared by God for the Jewish people. It is often called the “the Rose Red City”. A unique city, it is carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago . Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1km in length, which is flanked on either side by soaring, 80m high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself. The colours and formations of the rocks are dazzling. As you reach the end of the Siq, you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury). This is an awe-inspiring experience. A massive façade, 30m wide and 43m high, carved out of sheer, dusky pink rock-face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabataean king and represents the engineering genius of these ancient people.
Return to Amman. (B/D)
