My husband and I opened our Cagayan de Oro travel agency last April 28--so we're now one month of this little business of helping people get from one place to another.
Of course, I've been travelling most of my life since my family hails from Bohol but I studied in Cebu.
Along our one month of providing service, I've noticed certain basic things that some travelers either forget, overlook or totally don't know about. Here are some of them:
1. You need the confirmation number when traveling by plane. One time, a guy went to our office and asked me to print his e-ticket. He showed me a print out of what was forwarded to him by email, which he said will enable him to access the ticket. No confirmation number, just some details from the airline company--and a link that didn't lead to his e-ticket.
This confirmation number can be known as Booking Reference or Passenger Name Record (PNR), as the travel industry calls it. This PNR gives you the key to access your travel itinerary.
2. Take note of the place abbreviations. When you get your plane and boat tickets, it's good that you know what those abbreviations are so that you don't panic when you're all alone and you're not sure what you're looking for. One time for example, our customer wanted to go from the Philippines to Dubai. We checked out the plane's itinerary and it showed the route HKG and AMM. That's the shortcut for Hong Kong and Amman. The regular ones people use here are CGY (Cagayan), MNL (Manila), CEB (Cebu). Next time you travel, especially if it's a new place, check out the abbreviation and make sure you're going to the right place.
3. Take note of the correct time. The travel industry uses military hours. So that's 01:00 for 1 a.m. and 24:00 for 12 midnight. A flight that departs at 2025 and arrives at 2210 will sound you out right away that you're not traveling in the morning. When you get your ticket, check out these details as well.
4. Take note of the airline code. Airlines have codes. You'll notice 5J in your Cebu Pacific airline ticket. Airphil's code is 2P, Zestair is Z2, and Philippine Airlines is PR. If you're going abroad, check the code of your airline, just to make sure you're taking the right one. Or, if you're picking up a friend or relative, these codes will also help you go to the right terminal.
This is it for now. I hope I'm helping you make your next travel easier and more enjoyable. Remember, "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page" (St. Augustine).
